The Current State of the Obesity Crisis

Obesity is a condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems.

Obesity has been shown to be a result of the interaction of genes, behaviour, and environment. The condition is associated with chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and sleep apnea. Obesity is a major public health problem because it leads to many serious complications that reduce the quality of life and contribute significantly to economic costs. In this section, we will be discussing the current state of the obesity crisis. We will discuss what causes obesity, what are its effects on our lives and how it can be prevented in the future. Obesity is prevalent on the world today. The percentage of people in the United States that are obese has increased significantly during the past 30 years. In 1980, 3% of Americans were obese, but in 2011-2012 it was 35%. More than one-third of U.S children and adolescents are also classified as obese. In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults aged 18 years and older were overweight. Of these, over 650 million adults were obese. In 2016, 39% of adults aged 18 years and over (39% of men and 40% of women) were overweight. Overall, about 13% of the world's adult population (11% of men and 15% of women) were obese in 2016. The worldwide prevalence of obesity nearly tripled between 1975 and 2016.

What causes obesity and overweight, you may ask. Well, it's simply the imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended. There has been an increased intake of energy-dense food high in sugars and fat and an increase in physical inactivity due to the current state of the pandemic, etc. Obesity isn't just an imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended, there are consequences of having those imbalances. Some of the common health consequences of obesity and overweight are; cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke, which were the leading cause of death in 2012. Not to mention diabetes, cancers, and musculoskeletal disorders. Now that you've gotten a glimpse of the dangers of being overweight, it is time to check if you're in that category. Not to worry if you are, because we are here to help and guide u along the way.
